New Symmetry
Change is chaos. To change is to blast off into outer space - beautiful and terrifying.
Immerse yourself in experiential artist Stephanie Singer’s 30-minute pop-electronica adventure; an intimate window into the stages of her PTSD journey. Take a deep breath and enter the fantasy universe of the “New Symmetry” - a luminous fuschia spaceship designed to blast you into the emotional stratosphere.
Inspired by the minds of David Bowie, Prince and Janelle Monae, "New Symmetry" was conceived and created in pre-pandemic Russia. The film, while created ahead of Lady Gaga's “Chromatica” release, is in conversation with its bubblegum pink intergalactic universe.
“New Symmetry” is the beating heart of electronica pop, heartbreaking vocals and a hefty dose of surreality. Immersive visuals by Freyja Sewell, all encompassing audio production by Amanda Mayo (Slow Shudder) and Singer’s voice - all envelopes you in a stream of consciousness.
This is a spaceship anyone can board. Let Stephanie Singer be your captain.
context
During Steph’s residency the coronvavrius pandemic hit the UK. And we felt the mirage of capitalism fade. And behind it were all the things that had always been there but no-one had time to look. People living with trauma, sadness, hate, racism, sexism, bias, prejudice, pain, joy and love.
This, related to her through the lens of her recovery from a violent attack. Neither are a pleasant wake up call, but it is categorically an opportunity to learn. This further supported New Symmetry and the message it holds which is that we cannot “transform" without acknowledging that transformation is constantly happening.
If we fear change we will suffocate, but if we can embrace it we could end up in a much stronger place. Now it’s our job to stay awake. New Symmetry is a musical mantra - speaking to those people who may be struggling to ride the wave of constant change.
